Welcome to SOC 100: Introduction to Sociology
As an academic discipline, sociology provides us with theories and concepts that allow us to evaluate events and circumstances from a variety of perspectives. In the class, we will be dealing with sensitive issues such as social class, culture, race etc. Sociology allows us to discuss and analyze these events from an unbiased perspective. I hope everyone keeps an open mind in reading the text and in participating in discussions. One of the advantages of sociology is allowing us to use theories in interpreting certain issues. This is an effective way to push our personal biases aside and to understand our world from a more dynamic perspective. Personally, what I cherish most about the discipline is its applicability to everday life. It is my hope that even after the class ends, students will be able to see the utility of sociology in understanding and making sense of the world.
Once again, welcome and good luck!
Best,
Mari Anne Ryan Go
