Course Introduction

Marriage And Family (Military)Course Description

One of the issues of concern in contemporary American politics and society is the “disappearing” family values. At the center of this discussion are the changing ideals of family and marriage. This course examines the historical and social origins of marriage and family in the western world and provides a cross-cultural analysis of marriage and family as social institutions shaped by various economic, political, and cultural forces. It surveys the changing notions of family and gender relations and deconstructs common ideas of pre-modern and modern families, love, courtship, sexuality, and interpersonal communication. The challenge of the course is to learn how to understand institutions, decisions, and relations that are at one level intimate, but on the other hand formed and influenced by the larger social context.

Course Notes

Welcome to SOC 110: Marriage and Family!

Family Sociology is one of the many branches of the discipline. In this class, we will be dealing with the nuances of family, relationships, love, and the changing dynamics of family relations. What is interesting about this course is the sociological analysis of an institution that is both intimate and public. Most of us like to think that familial decisions and outcomes are personal. Family Sociology challenges these notions -- making us aware that exogenous matters shape the most intimate of relations.

I hope you will enjoy the class as much as I did preparing it. Some of the issues we will be dealing with are personal. I am urging you to keep an open mind and understand that we are going to be looking at family and relationships from an academic and theoretical perspective. The course will offer you a fresh viewpoint in dealing with familial issues. I hope it will enrich you both personally and academically.

I have prepared a weekly lesson plan for you to follow in order to better pace yourself in completing this course. Refer to the syllabus for a breakdown of the course requirements and a more detailed schedule.

Once again, welcome and good luck!

Best,
Mari Anne Ryan Go
