For English 145, I've chosen a number of major and slightly lesser-known authors of American short stories, and I have a feeling that you're going to enjoy all of them. As you read, avoid the tendency to skip to the end of the story to see how it ends. Take the time to move through the material and enjoy it.

Follow the steps below to get started in this course:

• Read the How to Begin section.
• Read the Course Syllabus.
• Complete the Letter of Agreement.
• Go to Course Lessons and begin with the first lesson.

Please keep the following in mind:

• Contact by e-mail is preferable. Feel free to e-mail me at any time. I can usually respond within 24 hours on weekdays.
• When you send me an e-mail of any kind, always identify yourself in the subject line. For example, "Jim Jones, E145, Question" or "Jim Jones, E145, Short Response #1."
• Be sure to submit your assignments by the due dates.  I can't accept late work, so if you have an unpredictable schedule, it is best to work ahead and submit your assignments early.
